To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.09290304. That factor is exact, so 100 square feet is exactly 9.290304 square meters, or 9.29 at two decimals. Going the other direction, a square meter holds about 10.7639 square feet.

Sqft to Sqm in One Step
Square meters = square feet x 0.09290304. Dividing by 10.7639 lands within 0.01 m² for anything house-sized, so a 500 square foot studio works out to 46.45 m² by either route. The unit can also be written m2, sq m or sqm, and all of them mean m².
When the number is headed for a permit form, multiply instead of dividing. The multiplier is exact, while 10.7639 has already been cut short. If all you have is a length and a width, the square footage calculator multiplies them and prints the square meters beside the square feet.

How Many Square Feet in a Square Meter
One square meter equals about 10.7639 square feet, or 10.76391042 if you want eight places. That makes the square meter to square feet formula a single step: multiply square meters by 10.7639. An 85 m² apartment comes to 914.93 square feet, a little short of a 1,000 square foot home. Before you compare that apartment with a US listing, check what each one counts, because a US total can leave out the basement.

Picture a square a bit over 3 feet 3 inches on each side. That patch of floor is one square meter, noticeably larger than a 3 by 3 foot mat. Because the metric unit is the bigger one, the metric number for any floor is always the smaller of the pair. If a square meter figure comes out larger than the square feet you started with, you multiplied by 10.7639 where you should have divided.
Watch out for multiplying by 3.28. That number turns one meter of length into feet, and an area has two sides. So 50 m² x 3.28084 gives 164.04, less than a third of the true 538.20 square feet. Squaring 3.28084 gets you back to 10.7639.
Land goes up a step to the hectare, which is 10,000 m² or about 107,639 square feet, while square feet to acres divides a US lot's square feet by 43,560.
Converting a Room Measured in Feet and Inches
Turn the inches into part of a foot, multiply the sides, and convert once at the end. A bedroom that is 13 ft 6 in by 10 ft 9 in has sides of 13.5 ft and 10.75 ft. Those multiply to 145.125 square feet, and 145.125 x 0.09290304 = 13.48 square meters.
You can check it from the metric side. 13.5 ft x 0.3048 is 4.1148 m, 10.75 ft x 0.3048 is 3.2766 m, and those two multiply to the same 13.48 m².
For a whole house, get the total in square feet first, as in measuring a house floor by floor, then convert the sum once so rounding does not pile up.
Room Sizes in Meters or Millimeters
Multiply the two metric sides, then multiply the square meters by 10.7639. A 3.6 m by 4.2 m bedroom is 15.12 m², which is 162.75 square feet, a figure you can set beside typical bedroom sizes in new US homes.

Converting each side first also works. At about 3.28084 feet per meter, 3.6 m is roughly 11.81 ft and 4.2 m roughly 13.78 ft. Keep every decimal while you multiply and you arrive at the same 162.75.
A panel sized in millimeters takes one more step. Move the decimal three places to get meters: a 1,200 mm x 2,400 mm sheet is 1.2 m x 2.4 m, or 2.88 m² (31.00 square feet).
How Much Rounding Changes the Answer
Divide by 10.7639 or 10.764 and you are fine. Divide by 10 and a 2,000 square foot house gains more than 14 m² that does not exist. The exact figure for that house is 185.80608 m².

| Method | Result for 2,000 sq ft | Off by |
|---|---|---|
| x 0.09290304 (exact) | 185.81 m² | nothing |
| ÷ 10.7639 | 185.81 m² | under 0.01 m² |
| ÷ 10.764 | 185.80 m² | under 0.01 m² |
| ÷ 10.76 | 185.87 m² | 0.07 m² high |
| ÷ 11 | 181.82 m² | 3.99 m² low |
| ÷ 10 | 200.00 m² | 14.19 m² high |
Dividing by 10 is fine for picturing a space in your head, but it overstates every area by about 7.6%. Rounding the sides first adds its own error, since 11.81 ft x 13.78 ft gives 162.74 square feet instead of 162.75, so keep full decimals until the final area.
Square Feet to Square Meters in Excel
Put the square feet in cell A2 and type =CONVERT(A2,"ft2","m2") in the next cell. For the reverse, swap the two codes: =CONVERT(A2,"m2","ft2"). Microsoft's CONVERT function page also lists "ft^2" and "m^2" as valid codes. The codes are case-sensitive, so "FT2" fails and Excel shows #N/A.
To test the setup, enter 100 in A2. The cell should read 9.290304. A plain multiply, =A2*0.09290304, gives identical results, and the 145.125 square foot bedroom returns 13.4826.
Why 0.09290304 Is Exact
The factor 0.09290304 has no rounding in it because the foot itself is pinned to the meter. In 1959 one foot was set at 0.3048 m, and squaring that length gives 0.09290304. NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) prints this factor in boldface in Appendix B.9 of its guide to the SI, the International System of Units. Boldface is how NIST flags a value with no rounding. Only the reverse, 10.7639, is trimmed, since 1 ÷ 0.09290304 never ends.
The factor does not use the older U.S. survey foot, about 0.3048006 m. NIST retired it after December 31, 2022, and its survey foot page names the meter as the preferred length unit for the United States. For a floor plan the gap is meaningless: on 2,000 square feet it moves the answer by less than 0.001 m².
FAQ
Is a square foot the same as m2?
No. One m2 equals about 10.7639 square feet, so the metric unit is more than ten times larger. Read in the other direction, a single square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m2. Mixing up the two would put any floor area off by a factor close to 11.
How much is a square foot in meters?
A square foot is 0.09290304 square meters, with no rounding. The answer has to be in square meters, not plain meters, because a meter measures length. Each edge of a square foot is 0.3048 meter long, and multiplying that edge by itself gives the factor.
Is square feet metric or imperial?
Square feet are not metric. NIST Handbook 44 classes them as a U.S. customary unit, not an SI unit. The metric unit of area is the square meter. Even so, the foot has been exactly 0.3048 meter since 1959, which is why the conversion factor comes out exact.
What factor turns square yards into square meters?
Multiply square yards by 0.83612736. A yard is exactly 0.9144 meter, and 0.9144 squared gives that factor, though the table in NIST's guide to the SI rounds it to 0.8361274. Starting from square feet, skip the yards and multiply by 0.09290304; the square feet to square yards conversion covers the yard side.
Conclusion
Let whoever reads your number pick the method. A permit form or a materials order gets the exact 0.09290304 result at two decimals. Picturing a room in your head can live with dividing by 10 and its 7.6% overstatement. For new floor covering, keep the original square feet too, because sizing a flooring order runs on them and ends at a carton count.
